Currency Exchange. Name of local currency: Indonesian Rupiah (Rp). US$1.00 equal to Rp8,575 in 2003, Rp8,985 in 2004 and Rp9,298 in June 2006.

Hotels. Hotels in Indonesia range in price from 15,000 to 35,000 Indonesian Rupiah (Rp15,000 – Rp35,000) for low-end accommodation, Rp35,000 – Rp80,000 for mid-range hotels and Rp80,000 to Rp180,000 for high-end hotels. Deluxe hotels are generally priced at above Rp180,000 per night.

Airports. Soekarno-Hatta Jakarta International Airport is located in Cengkareng which is about 20km north of Jakarta. Taxi and limousine services to and from the airport are available as well as shuttle bus services every 30 minutes at a cost of Rp4,000 one-way. Other major airports include Denpasar in Bali and Balikpapan in Kalimantan. Departure tax is Rp50,000 for international flights and Rp11,000 for domestic flights.

Business Hours. Business hours in Indonesia are generally from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. from Monday through to Friday. Businesses which have Fridays as full workdays allow Muslim employees to take at least an hour off to attend Friday prayers in the afternoon. There are also businesses which have additional working hours on Saturday mornings but this usually ends by 1:00p.m.

Common Courtesies. Public displays of affection is strongly discouraged between people of the opposite sex, even hugging between husbands and wives. It is also considered disrespectful to give or receive with the left hand, or to beckon someone to come over by crooking or wagging a finger. When passing in front of older people, it is customary to lower heads or bend down slightly as a mark of respect.

Travel. There are a number of low-cost airlines serving various Indonesian destinations and overbooking is a common occurrence on domestic flights. Buses are popular for long-distance land travel and there are several bus service categories; economy, express and air-conditioned luxury buses. Rail services are available in Java and Sumatra and they also range from cheap to luxury. Regular ferry services ply between the many islands of Indonesia.
