Why Southeast Asia
The 10 member countries of the Association
of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) represent
a single market under the ASEAN Free Trade
Agreement (AFTA). Southeast Asia has a
combined population of more 550 million and
a GDP growing at 5.0% annually. Thus, Southeast Asia represents a potential market for many businesses expanding or entering into this regional market.
ASEAN as a single market imported US$360 billion and exported US$406 billion worth of goods to countries outside the ASEAN in 2004. ASEAN's major trading partners include the United States, China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and Australia. Exports between the ASEAN countries increased from US$93 billion in 2000 to US$120 billion in 2004 with the implementation of AFTA.
ASEAN received a total of US$242 billion in foreign direct investments from 1995 to 2004. Major recipients of foreign investments are Singapore followed by Malaysia and Thailand and mainly in technology related industries. Smaller but significant recipients include Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam. Major foreign investors include the United States, Japan, European Union, Taiwan and Korea.
